The 16 to 19 Tuition Fund 2023 to 2024 academic year

The 16 to 19 tuition fund is ring fenced funding for schools, colleges and all other 16 to 19 providers to mitigate the disruption to learning arising from coronavirus (COVID-19).  This statement explains how HRUC (Harrow, Richmond upon Thames and Uxbridge Colleges) will use this funding to prioritise support for disadvantaged students.

Supporting students

The funding is to support small group tuition for students aged 16 to 19 in English, maths and other subjects that have been disrupted, including and/or academic learning.  Students aged 19 to 24 who have an education, health and care (EHC) plan are also eligible for support.  All students must be on a 16 to 19 study programme and the funding will be used to support the tuition activity above and beyond the programmes of education already planned.  It is for students who:

  • have not achieved a grade GCSE 4 or above in English and/or maths.
  • have a grade GCSE 4 or above in English and/or maths, but are from an economically disadvantaged background and who need catch-up support.

How is HRUC using this fund?

All students on 16-19 study programmes will complete a series of assessments in the first few weeks of their programme to identify gaps in learning, knowledge and understanding.  Support will be put in place, where necessary, to ensure all students are making progress towards their qualification outcomes and target grades.

The fund will be used to provide small group and one-to-one tuition in English, Maths, academic and vocational learning.  This tuition will be delivered face to face, on-line or through a blended delivery model and will be in addition to timetabled hours.  Sessions will be based on the needs of individual students.  The additional support may run for a few weeks e.g. to address a specific gap in learning, or may run for the majority of the academic year.  Regular reviews will take place to ensure students are making the necessary progress in their learning.

The support offered will include:

  • English and maths skills development, including support for assessments
  • Academic/technical knowledge and skills development to make up for any shortfall from previous learning
  • Mastering skills competencies and development of some practical skills impacted due to lost learning time
  • Assessment preparation, including exams, assignments and practical competency tests
  • Specialist support to enable students to overcome barriers to learning for students with SEND
  • Personal support to motivate students and equip them with strategies to engage with their learning
